Camassia

The Camassia bulb, scientifically known as Camassia quamash, is a stunning bulb that blooms in spring. Its slender flower stalks reach heights of 24 to 30 inches, adorned with numerous star-like blossoms that unfurl from the base upwards. This bulb thrives in garden settings, readily naturalizing over time. It flourishes in well-drained, elevated soil conditions. Its flowers come in various hues, spanning from white and cream to blue or purple, depending on the cultivar. Surprisingly, it belongs to the asparagus family. Historically, certain varieties served as vital food sources for Indigenous peoples and settlers in parts of the American Old West. It goes by several common names, including camas, quamash, Indian hyacinth, camash, and wild hyacinth.
